At 44, actor-director Baltasar Kormakur may soon be Iceland's most famous export since Bjork. And now, with his first American film, Inhale, reaching theaters today (10/22/10) in limited release, his profile could expand. Inhale stars Dermot Mulroney, Diane Kruger and Sam Shepard in a drama about so-called organ tourism -- the desperate efforts of people in need of organ transplants to shop for them in a secretive black-market culture in Mexico and elsewhere. Mulroney and Kruger play the parents of a terminally-ill daughter who needs a new set of lungs. But Mulroney, as an upright prosecutor, finds himself pushed to make harder and harder choices when he starts looking for organs in Juarez. A star of theater and film in Iceland as an actor, Kormakur began developing an international reputation when he directed his first film, 101 Reykjavik, in 2000. Since then,
Good things come to those who wait and for those who feel as though they've suffered through a year of largely uninspired films up to now will likely breathe a sigh of relief at the sound of names like Darren Aronofsky, Sofia Coppola and Peter Weir. 'Tis the season for Jim Carrey to take a pay cut to star in a gay romance like "I Love You Phillip Morris" or Javier Bardem is whispering sweet nothings to spirits in Alejandro Gonzalez Inarittu's "Biutiful" rather than Julia Roberts.

While it could be the weather or the crowds that might dissuade people from heading to the theaters this holiday season, a handful of distributors are providing plenty of reasons to stay in with plenty of films available at just the touch of a button. IFC and Magnolia continue to bring the arthouse to your house with hot festival favorites such as Lena Dunham's comedy "Tiny Furniture" and the Kerry Washington-Anthony Mackie drama "Night Catches Us" arriving on demand at the same time they hit theaters, while companies like FilmBuff and Gravitas are debuting new films from Edward Burns ("Nice Guy Johnny") and Melissa Leo ("One Night") on an array of platforms to choose from.
