Movie synopsis: Haunted by memories of his ex-girlfriend Alice (Beau Garrett), a heartbroken Billy (Nick Stahl) returns home to Northern Virginia seeking solace from old friends. But what he finds there is more disconcerting than comforting: his best friend Stanley (Jonathan Jackson) has become unstable, mysterious, and withdrawn from those around him. Billy teams up with another old friend, Stanley's roommate Christian (Christopher M. Clark), to find out what's going on, and as they probe Stanley's recent activities, their friend's behavior seems more and more bizarre and frightening. The discovery of blood-stained evidence among Stanley's possessions pulls them deeper into their friend's nightmareand eventually leads to a violent confrontation that not everyone will survive.
As poorly thought-out as its stylized but generic title, which in no way describes the core of the movie, this low-budget neo-noir wannabe, shot around Arlington, Va., has no viable prospects in either the art-house circuit or late-night cable. Poorly written, shot, acted and otherwise executed, a calamity is exactly what it is.
I say this knowing that for an indie filmmaker to get a movie completed, let alone distributed, is a minor miracle, and you need to have respect for writer-director James M. Hausler's efforts. But as a jazz musician tells a prospective band member in Frank D. Gilroy's The Gig, "It's not religion. Devotion isn't enough."
This is Hausler's third film, after Trip Out (2005) and Wild Seven (2006), neither of which I've seen but the latter of which features recognizable names such as Robert Loggia, Richard Roundtree, Lucie Arnaz and, like this movie, Robert Forster. Maybe they show promise; if so, Kalamity is promise woefully unfulfilled.
Another recognizable name, Nick Stahl, gets short shrift here as the star, since the movie essentially isn't about his character, Billy Klepack, but about Billy's old friend, Stanley Keller (Jonathan Jackson), a car-stereo salesman who starts out as "weird, creepy psycho" and stays at that pitch throughout the movie, without nuance or understanding. Stanley hates women, ever since being dumped by Ashley (Alona Tal), and now that Billy's back in town after breaking up with Alice (Beau Garrett), well well, I'm not sure what, since very little that Stanley does makes dramatic sense. Ashley is missing and presumed dead, police detectives are as nonexistent as logical thinking in this town, and Stanley wants to hurt Alice because he hates women. A masterpiece of psychological insight this is not.
A note to the filmmakers, for practicality's sake: Don't cast two women who look alike and whose characters' names both start with A. It's arbitrary and it doesn't help anything
