The Kenya Tourism ministry has now put in place plans to launch a variety of newproducts away from the traditional beach activities and game watching. In a move that promises to be a complete departure from the normalway of doing things, the ministry will now focuss its resources on therich Coastal cultures and attractive sites outside the parks and beaches, especially in Taita and Taveta districts which wouldbe part of this new package. Famous sites such as Shomoto and Kino caves in Wundanyi would be included in the new tourism circuit.
Kino cave, otherwise known as Kenyatta Cave, is famous for being used by prominent East African freedom fighters as a hideout duringthe liberation struggle. Mzee Jomo Kenyatta, Dr. Julius Nyerere, Mr Oginga Odinga, Mr Ronald Ngala, Mr Paul Ngei and Mr Fred Kubai were among those african leaders who used the cave as a hideout. The ministry says that out of the 62 sites and products it has identified in the Coast, more than 30 will be from Taita.
Already land had been acquired at Bamburi in Mombasa on whicha cultural centre similar to the Nairobi Bomas of Kenya will be constructedto take advantage of the region's rich culture for touristic exploits. According to a ministry representative, the new centre christened, Bomas of Kenya Coast', will be different from theNairobi one because the latter will allow different communities to showcase their cultures unlike in Nairobi where one group does everything. This will be one way of changing the perception among tourists that the Maasai culture is the only one that is still alive.
