An accredited college for undergraduate education, U.S Air Force Academy or USAFA is meant for imparting education to candidates for the post of officers in United States Air Force. Youngest among the five service academies in United States, it has served the nation by motivating young people to enter the defense services.
Campus Features
Campus of the U.S Air Force Academy is located to the north of Colorado Springs in the El Paso County which is a part of the state of Colorado in United States. The Academy is also a major tourist attraction for overseas visitors. Millions of visitors arrive at Colorado to visit the academy every year.
Mission Statement
Pronounced mission statement of the academy is not only to train and educate but inspire both male and female to become officers in the U.S Air Force and render service to the nation.
Academic Streams
Established in 1959, the institute offers 4 year academic training to trainees who receive Bachelor of Science degree.Most of the degree holders are commissioned as Second Lieutenant in the United States Air Force.
Academy Profile
Listed among the most selective educational institutions in United States, the academy is not ranked by most of the ranking organizations. Reason is that it serves a special mission. Even the publications like U.S News and World Report that lists thousands of universities and colleges giving them ranking do not rank the U.S Air Force Academy for this reason. Of course, there are a few like the Forbes Magazine give ranking and it has ranked it as the second best public college and seventh best overall college in United States during the year 2009.
Eligibility Criteria
Aspirant candidates are considered on the basis of Their respective academic achievements.Leadership qualities demonstrated.Excellence in physical and athletic feats.Strength of character indicating dedication, determination, and discipline.
Process of Admission
Academy has its own unique method of admission.Candidates have to pass a fitness test to gain admission in the academy.They will also undergo thorough medical examinations.Each candidate has to secure a nomination from the member of Congress in the candidate's home district.
Enrollment and Special Features
Around 1,400 cadets attain classes every year and about a thousand out of them would be graduates. Boarding, lodging, and tuition fees are all borne by the government of United States.
The candidates however, have to make a commitment to serve a specific number of years in the defense services on completion of graduation.
