subject: An Invisible Dog Fence Will Offer Your Pet Freedom [print this page]

An invisible dog fence offers a "fenceless" border to your home and property. For those of us who do not own a fenced in yard, one of these items is one of the most beneficial options to keep your dog inside the property without the expense of putting a regular fence around your home. There are two main types of an invisible dog fence on the market. There is the wireless type of containment and the electric or underground type of canine fence. The biggest difference is how they are set up, and this article being a general overview, makes reference to both types.

For the electric, also known as in-ground, model of dog fence, the way it functions is pretty basic. First, a wire is buried around the perimeter of the property you would like contained. This wire emits a radio signal to a lightweight collar that your canine wears. Your pet should be wearing the lightweight collar whenever she is outside in the containment area. One main thing to emphasize is that your dog must be trained and properly trained for an invisible dog fence to do its job in a humane and effective method. When your canine gets close to the boundary set by the wires, the collar will let out a warning sound letting your canine know she is getting too close. If your pet is properly trained to use the fence system, he will often not venture past this point. However, if the dog goes past the boundary line, the receiver will emit a mild static shock to tell your pet that is too far. The shock is not harmful to your canine and should not be viewed as wrong. It is similar to sliding across the carpet in socks and then touching your loved ones.

Another type of invisible dog fence discussed is the wireless type of dog fencing. These systems have a transmitter that can be put in any safe and dry location like a shed. Instead of wire being placed around the boundary of your property, when using a wireless fencing system, you really only need to plug it in and choose the area of the boundary. These types of systems are extremely nice if you need portability with your dog fence. They can be taken with you wherever you go. The way the receiver collar functions with a wireless fence is quite similar to the electronic fence.

There are many of us who do not think that using these designs of fencing systems is safe. As long as instructions are followed and correct training methods are implemented, an invisible dog fence will offer a very humane and productive way to keep your pet contained. It is also a fraction of the cost of fencing in your entire yard. The receiver collars that come with these models of systems are specially designed to have adjustable settings of correction. You should use the lowest possible correction that effectively gets the message to your pet. Smaller pets need lower settings and there are even special models available for small dogs.

An invisible dog fence is a wonderful way to keep your canine safe and secure within the boundaries you set. With a little training, your dog will never venture past the point of needing a zap. Personally, with my dogs, the minute they see the receiver collar being put on them, they are on their best behavior and enjoy the freedom they get from one of these fantastic systems. If you are thinking one of these products may be right for your dog, please do the necessary research and take the time to find out about the correct training methods.
