The Galaxy S was one of the most popular mobile phones of 2010 and achieved such record sales that it has in the space of just a few months become the biggest selling Android smartphone of all time. Bearing this in mind, it was no surprise to find that Samsung would plan to extend the Galaxy S into a whole range of phones. While the Galaxy S Plus and Galaxy SL are just variations on the original design the Galaxy S2 is the first true successor.
Judging by the improvement on the original and by the current state of Samsung's main competitors it looks highly probable that the Galaxy S2 could easily steal its predecessor's position of bestselling Android smartphone. The Galaxy S2 is the first dual core handset that Samsung plans to release and it automatically gets one over on the likes of LG's Optimus 2X by coming with an increased processor speed of 1.2GHz. This is also combined with 1GB RAM to make the Galaxy S2 an exceptionally fast phone.
Many people had expected the 2X to be phenomenally fast but the phone was unfortunately bogged down by a high amount of bloatware. This is not something for which Samsung has been known to do and so the Galaxy S2 should be enjoyable to its full processing potential. Other areas of the new Galaxy S that have seen remarkable improvements are with its connectivity. The HSPA (3G) connections are now twice as fast as previous phones and the Wi-Fi comes with the benefit of DLNA and Wi-Fi Direct making it much easier to connect the phone to other devices.
The S2 is a fantastic phone when it comes to visual entertainment with a good degree of support for video offline and online. The phone supports the playback of 1080p video and is one of the first smartphones to come with support for 1080p video recording through its 8 megapixel camera. This camera also provides fantastic still photos, comes with an LED flash and images can be easily uploaded to online services like Picasa, Flickr and Facebook. Along with this the S2 features an HDMI port allowing you to watch your home movies in the comfort of a larger screen.
For video content as well as music content and other multimedia files the S2 comes with either 16GB or 32GB of on board storage. This is combined with support for 32GB microSD cards providing the phone with a potential 64GB of storage space for personal media. While the iPhone 5 is rumoured to feature a similar level of storage capacity this will not see release until the very end of 2011 and will not benefit from swappable memory cards like the S2.
There are any other ways to keep yourself entertained on the S2, either just by browsing the web with the excellent HTML browser (with Flash support available), or through many amazing apps and games that can be acquired through Android Market. With the highest quality 4.3" Super AMOLED Plus screen and Android Gingerbread in operation the S2 outperforms all rivals in terms of software and at just 8.5mm is currently the thinnest smartphone available.
