Envisage a film where the plot is innocent people living quietly on a tropical island in the South Pacific, going about their daily lives. Their carbon footprint is very light and they don't covet the riches of their materialistic neighbours, as seen in the modern western world. These people live in simple houses, eat simple food and enjoy a happy and peaceful outlook on life.
These people in Vanuatu were voted the Happiest Country on Earth.
However beyond the horizon creeps a silent and unseen deadly murderer that could wipe out the simple way of life for the happy islanders. It could rob them of their home and their future. Even now it is sounding its unremitting death call.
All this because some far away multi-million dollar companies continue to take their profit. Through the demands of the modern world and high finance, every person's life on earth is being held to ransom.
Following a tsunami and earthquake that was 9 on the Richter scale, radiated water seeped into the ocean at the crippled Japanese Fukushima nuclear power plant. Imperfections during the construction of the power plant were covered up and required checks were not carried out through the years of operation. It was too expensive for the company to design proper protection for the backup generators in the basement or an illegally held quantity of spare nuclear rods.
Fukushima was not designed to withstand the 7 metre wall of water that hit it on March 11, 2011. All this on top of a known fault line.
The Chernobyl nuclear disaster was triggered through unsafe methods of operation that left the power plant vulnerable to a power surge. The fallout had an effect on hundreds of thousands of innocent bystanders, as well as polluting the surrounding area for 900 years.
Only two out of 110 nuclear power plants in the U.S. were reported to have full fire safety regulations in place. The regulations are over kill' was the claim of many in the industry.
