So What Is WordPress?
So What Is WordPress?

WordPress has been around for more than five years now and it's popularity keeps on growing. Most of those who heard about WordPress knows that it has something to do with websites and blogging.

So what is WordPress?

It's a good question to start with and this article will simplify the answer to "what is WordPress" and give it in easy to understand language.

WordPress is an open source CMS (Content Management System) platform for developing websites. Open source means that the source code is given for free. And this means that anybody who is knowledgeable in the technologies used to create WordPress can modify and/or customize the source codes. CMS means that you can login to WordPress and modify the contents of your website yourself. And it looks like a word processor like MS Word or Open Office Writer.

Most web hosting services provide WordPress for their users. And most have configured it in such a waythat you do not have to have technical experience to install it. Once you are logged in to your web hosting provider, all you need to do is click on the button or the link to install WordPress and provide your domain name, email address, username and password. And in less than five minutes you have WordPress installed on your web host. If you type your domain name on your browser you should be able to see your website in its rawest form.

WordPress comes with a default theme. A theme is like the skin to your website. It gives your website the appearance it should have. The wonderful thing about this is that once you are logged in to WordPress, you can choose from hundreds of themes available online. You can choose themes that have nature's elements, themes that have a cosmopolitan flavor, themes that looks like magazines, etc. Some of these themes come with subtle animation andare also provded for free by other providers such as htmlpress.net. ,

And this in a nutshell is what WordPress is all about.

There are other aspects to WordPress. If you do not have or do not like to have a web host for yourself then you can always go to WordPress.com and register for a website. And one good thing about this is it's for free!

And so if someone ask you what is WordPress - you can always tell them it's your free website!
