The only thing worse than having to scrape your car off every morning in the cold, is having your car finally give up the ghost and refuse to work. If you follow the handy tips below, you should be able to minimise and problems in the bad weather.

Make sure that you plan your route before hand, and know of an alternative. This is always a problem in the winter, when roads get closed due to the ice and snow. People get panicked when they are used to travelling the same route and it is closed, so check out alternatives in case of emergency.

Pack a blanket in the boot. In the case of accident, you could be waiting hours for someone to come to your assistance, and in the cold weather, you don't want to have frozen by the time you are rescued. Likewise, ensure that you have an in car phone charger, so you always have a lifeline.

Drive defensively. Keep your eye out for ice and skid marks, which could signal a dangerous patch on the road. Be aware of your surroundings in case you need ot give instruction to landmarks.

If a storm begins, don't leave the house. People seem to think that when the snow begins, the best idea is to go out and get supplies. It really isn't. If you need to make a journey, walk.

Be alert to frostbite. In case you have no blanket, be aware that drowsiness and exhaustion can be signs of frost bite. Huddle with passengers to keep warm.

Make sure that your car is in good condition, and ensure you have valid Car Insurance.
