Gerber 31-000754 Bear Grylls Survival Series Scout, Drop Point Knife, Serrated
I dont know if this knife belongs in the ULTIMATE SURVIVAL SERIES BUT it is a good little knife. It is small and very compact. Blade is sturdy, sharp, and high carbon steal. The blade is great 3.3 inch hefty blade with an OK serrated edge. It locks in tight with a small back lock. Clearly set out to do work but it lacks in weight and a good handle. The knife has two thumb studs for easy opening but it take two hands to open this knife. Perhaps thats just because its new though...All the items in Bear's collection have rubber handles but this handle is rather slick, VERY small in the hand, and the plastic ends seem cheap and easily breakable. However, for $20 you cannot go too wrong. But make sure you buy this item on amazon.com NOT in stores. In stores I have seen them cost up to $50!!!!!!
I admit up front, I am not a fan of Bear Grylls, and not the biggest fan of Gerber knives either.
But when I saw this folder I liked the over all design, so bought one to give it a try. It's lightweight and the handle is very ergonomic. No steel liners in the handle, so it's definitely not a hard use knife, and should never be batonned.
Out of the box, the lock is solid with no blade play and the blade is literally "hair popping" sharp.
The pocket clip, is not reversible for southpaws, so that was a bummer, and it's not really removable either, since it's incorporated into the pivot screw.
Overall, I like it, I see no problem using it as a normal "EDC" knife that should do everything you would reasonably want from a pocketknife.
I am not a survival knife expert who can tell you anything about metallurgy, points, serrations or how the knife is ground. What I can tell you is that this BG knife is sharp & well made. I cut a lot of heavy cardboard & strapping at work during my day. This BG knife works great for me. Still sharp after two weeks. I recommend it!
