The happening takes place in the future where people are required to live in isolation underground. The residents have no contact with the outside world and due to frequent earthquakes are forced to dig further into the world, those assigned to the provision of digging are called "Diggers". This village is home to an orphaned boy named Simon, whose parents were smashed to death in an earthquake. Simon is known by the other residents as the greatest of the diggers, he is however not well thought of by his acquaintances. After seeing an orphan referred to as Kamina, who dreams of returning to the surface world, that he once went to as a little one, he is pulled into his group "Team Gurren". Kamina is soon locked up by a village elder after his failed attempt to make it to the surface. Simon will soon discover the key to effectively smash through the surface.
As the lagann entourage crashes through to the surface they are met by enemies and friends as they continue on their path. Throughout their mission, Kamina is hurt and soon perishes, leaving Team Gurren to fight the encounter without him. A statue of Kamina stands in the center of a fresh town built among the destruction of the old capitol, efficiently named Kamina City.
There is a video game out there. Also a number of novels based on the magna. The film, named Gurren Lagann: Childhood's End is now out on DVD.
