Treating head lice can be easy

If your child has head lice, you're probably wondering how to get rid of these parasites.

Follow these steps to treat head lice and reduce the risk of spread:

1. Check the presence of live lice on the heads of all family members.

2. Learn about available treatments against head lice. Then go to your local pharmacy and ask the pharmacist to help you choose a treatment. Administer therapy according to the instructions. Treat all family members who live lice preferably the same day and at the same time.

3. Treat personal items that come in contact with the infested person's head, such as hats, pillows, stuffed animals, brushes and combs by washing in hot water (at least 66 C) and drying with hot air for 15 minutes. Store non-washable items in a sealed plastic bag for 2 weeks to kill lice and nits. It is also possible to dry clean clothes and other non-washable items. Soak brushes and combs 5 to 10 minutes in hot water. Do not use fumigant (sprayable substance used to kill pests or prevent infestation) to "disinfect" your house. These products may be toxic and do not help to eliminate head lice. Instead, continue vacuuming the carpets, furniture, car seats children, car seats and other surfaces on which a person may have caused his head.

4. To reduce in future, the risk of catching or spreading lice infestation, hair long, show your child how to avoid close contact between heads, store personal belongings, like his hat scarf and baseball cap in the sleeves of his coat and regularly inspect your child's head in order to detect lice.

Head lice can be treated with nonprescription products purchased at the pharmacy. Your pharmacist can help you learn more about the risks and benefits of each treatment and to choose a product that will suit you and your family.
