It's not just the person drinking that's the cause of all this mayhem of hurt, pain, money spent, suffering, horror, peoples lives shattered and people laying on the road bleeding out. Somebody somewhere sold the person alcohol. So is it their fault?
It's a tricky question. Is it fair that staff doing an RSA course and following responsible service of alcohol practices may get fired for not moving enough stock? If they choose to serve someone who is drunk, you could argue they are partly to blame. I've served in pubs and clubs and people are pretty good, they are there to relax or even cut loose and have a party, even find someone to party with...in short they are there to have fun.
Frankly, it's not the job of bar staff to be the fun police. But, some of those people go on to get violent, drink and drive and so on. It's impossible for bar staff to know who's going to do bad things and who's just there for a good time. Our job then is to stop serving drinks to people who have clearly had too much to drink and show it in what they say and how they act.
Generally, places serving booze support staff cutting off idiots. That's because we all want to keep ourselves and other patrons safe from these dangerous idiots. The best thing you can do, is to do an RSA course and get your RSA certificate. What you want is to find one that can be done online and that produces a recognised qualification. Watch out for variations between different States. In Australia for example, liquor laws vary depending on if you serve in QLD, WA, SA, NT and so on.
