Buy a plant that looks healthy and is suitable for growing indoors. You should avoid picking plants with spots, patches, yellow or wilted leaves or those that lack natural lustre. You can buy plants like lucky bamboo, cast iron, christmas cactus, aloe, croton, money plant, etc.
Air and light:
These are the basic requirements for a plant to grow. Indoors of our homes have less light and fresh air therefore keep your plants in such a place where they can receive maximum air and sunlight. Don't change the position of the pot frequently as this may hamper the growth of your plant. If your house does not receive enough sunlight then you can light the place artificially with flourescent lamps.
Give them some sunshine:
Plants are positively phototropic i.e. they grow towards the sunlight and this may result in bending of the plants. Keep your plants outside for a few minutes in direct sunlight every alternate say as this will help them grow straight. Don't keep the plant in sunlight for long, as it may result in wilting and drastic change in temperature and light may perish it.
Humidity:
Humidity levels are low inside a house and air-conditioners further aggravate the condition. Spraying water on your plants will help moisturize them and will also make them sparkling clean. You may also keep a bol containing water to maintain moisture levels.
Water and fertilizers:
Plants require water to prepare their food. Regular watering of the plant is essential however majority of the people tend to over or under do it. If the soil of the pot is moist then watering is not required. Water soluble fertilizers having nitrogen, potassium and phosphorous should be used for balanced growth of the plant.
Inspect:
Check the plant regularly for any hint of pests, insects or disease. If you see any sign of disease isolate the infected plant from the other plants, then remove the infected leaves and wash the plant. If the problem persists then use a pesticide. Remove dead and dried leaves regularly from the pot and the plant.
Re-potting:
Your plant cannot grow in the same pot forever as the roots grow and require more space hence you need to change the pot after some time and also rotate the soil. This will ensure proper growth of your plants.
