Getting firm and flat stomach is something we all crave for. However, improper diet, wrong or even lack of exercises has made it impossible to lose the fat around the waist and get those six packs to show up.
The most common mistake we make in an effort to flatten our stomach is pumping 200+ crunches per day. While this will definitely build our ab muscles, they will probably not show up because of the thick layer of fat still covering them. Furthermore, focusing only on crunches can get your neck strained and back injured. Proper exercise routines combined with suitable diet is the key in getting a flat and firm stomach.
To start burning fat around your waist you need to engage in some form of cardio workout. Running or cycling are perfect examples of it. Cardio exercises can range from low intensity to high intensity interval training or HIIT. To maximize fat burning you should consider HIIT exercises because you'll get the best results from the increased resistance. With HIIT exercise, you are engaging a larger group of muscles in your workout routine, which helps in burning more fat, including that around your waist.
Proper diet is important to eliminate fat. Add fiber to your diet and cut down your intake of bad carbohydrates. That includes white bread, pastas, potatoes, white rice, etc. Whole grain food and brown rice are a perfect substitution because they contain good carbohydrates. They are not refined and come in their natural form and are more complex and get absorbed slowly into our system. Our body actually spends calories to digest them. To satisfy the need for fibers you should eat more fruit and green vegetables.
And last but not the least are core strength exercises. Abdominal muscles are part of a larger group of muscles that we also call 'core muscles'. Core muscles include our abs, back, butt and thighs. When doing our workout routines we should not focus explicitly on abdominals, but should also do core exercises. Strengthening the core will allow your body to transfer energy effectively from lower to the upper body and back again. Each movement our body makes includes the core muscles and working only on our abs will put the body out of balance, and we risk injuries and back pain.
