Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc: The TV Phone
Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc: The TV Phone

Sony has taken a large step forward in integrating all of their technology from across the brand into their one of their newest handsets, the Sony Ericsson Experia Arc. But first, let's look at the Sony Bravia Television that has been a leader in technology since it hit the market in 2005. The Bravia has always prided itself on being full of lush colours with bold contrast and a rich viewing experience. It is easily one of the best sets on the market. But what does that have to do with Xperia Arc? Sony has finally decided it is time to dump some of that TV knowledge into their smartphones. And the Xperia Arc is the awesome first generation of this integration.

The Bravia Engine technology works beautifully on a 4.2 inch touchscreen, providing it with better viewing experience for any kind of video, from YouTube to the films you shoot yourself. The claim is that the technology offers truer, more accurate colours, provides enhanced noise reduction, better sharpness, and bolder, more realistic contrast. And the Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc really does deliver on all of this. The display simply cannot be gushed about enough, if it was about 40 inches bigger you could easily hang it on your wall as the centre piece of your living room.

And the technology seeps throughout the rest of the mobile. The camera shoots in 720p HD which looks phenomenal while you are watching it in playback and there is also a front facing camera allowing you to have Skype conversations with your mates back home. The still camera is 8.1 megapixels of picture perfect quality. Sony Ericsson has also included another new piece of technology for still shots called Sony Exmor R which is a back-illuminated sensor that is especially helpful when you want to take great shots in low light. This type of light sensor is only now being introduced in traditional cameras, so including it in a handset is a really great step in smartphone technology.

All of this is run on the brand new Android 2.3 Gingerbread operating system, which means that all of your toys will function flawlessly. The Android app store offers thousands of games, tools, newspapers, and readers and the platform provides a really stylish skin to organise and display them on. The social media widget, in particular, has had a big upgrade as it lets you scroll through your Facebook, Twitter, etc. accounts all from the home screen without sending you all over the internet to find out what your friends are up to.

Sony is including an HDMI cable in the box on a pay monthly phone plan so that you can stream whatever you are doing on your phone directly to your TV, even if it isn't a Sony. They have really thought to include everything a techie could want when looking for a smartphone that has an interface that will look good next to that massive flat screen TV. The Xperia Arc is a massive step in display not only for Sony, but for the mobile industry as a whole.
