From The HTC Evo To The iPhone 4G, Mobile Phones Arent The Only Technology Moving Faster Than Light

Two days to go before I take possession of the new HTC Desire smart phone. Although it's only been about three months since the Desire's UK debut, there are already rumblings that more powerful phones from HTC and other brands are on their way.

At the time of the HTC Desire release it was dubbed by some as 'the iPhone Killer', yet within the last two days, details of the brand new, all-singing, all-dancing Apple iPhone 4G have been unveiled - the new kid in town...until next month anyway.

It's difficult to guess where technological advances will take us in the next 5 to 10 years. Even today, many of the gadgets and facilities found in day-to-day places like hospitals, offices, and our homes would have been considered the stuff of science fiction just 20 years ago.

One prediction made recently was that the days of the home PC in its current format are numbered. With the increased demand for the new technological features found in smart phones, tablet computers and cloud computing, that prediction just may hold a glimmer of truth.

Many of the things we take for granted today were once at the cutting edge of technology developed by the likes of NASA and the armed forces. Some corners have even reported that the technological gap between high-level government organisations (like NASA and the armed forces) and the high street is currently 3 to 5 years only. That leaves a lot to the imagination, considering what is already available to the general public.

One thing is sure: With the speed of developments, and new technology seemingly becoming outdated by the time it hits the shops, I can't help but wonder how soon it will be before we're all playing 3D holographic chess games like in the original 'Star Wars' film, going on a holiday of a lifetime without leaving home (like 'Total Recall') or in the extreme, having our very consciousness and sense of being uploaded to some sort of storage device while a new body is being grown to replace our old.

Whatever comes in the future, we live in exciting and fast-paced times. Today we use technology to make our lives more convenient and hassle-free. The next leap forward could see real progress in saving and extending life, as well as breaking the barriers of stellar travel and the exploration of new star systems.
