Far too many players see the Paladin as a weaker warrior and don't feel like it is really a good class for use in PvP. All they see is players using Ret Spec Paladins spending too much time in melee and fail to see how much more a well played Pally can do in both the Arenas and the battlegrounds.
Cataclysm has brought important changes to all classes, totally new talent trees, new abilities and changes to the mechanics of how you play these characters. Cataclysm has brought significant changes to Paladins. Defense, Armor Penetration, Spell Power and Block have been removed just as fast as they came.
Noticeably, one significant change is that more races can become Paladins, like Taurens. There was also changes regarding the restoration of Warriors to the top of the Tank pecking order, but Pally tanks are still very popular. Pally gets three new abilities for defense, healing and crowd control. At level 81, you also have Blinding Shield against AoE that has the ability to blind all enemies within range.
At level 83, you have short range Healing Hands that is capable of healing all members within its radius and allowing the Paladins to cast healing spells while still active. At level 85, you have Guardian of Ancient Kings which gives support to the Pallys and can summon a winged guardian of light that is armed with sword that will allow massive healing.
If you are a Healadin, your helper will heal the person in your party with the lowest health. For the Retadin, the guardian will do damage to your enemy and finally if you are Prot Pally it will absorb damage for you. The Healing spell works by cooling down the fight for at least 3 minutes if the fight is becoming too long.
Every new ability will certainly support the Paladins in PvE and PvP scenarios. The most important part is that you need to set up your talent trees very carefully and you should learn how to play your Paladin again as he is going to be a lot more like he was in Vanilla Wow.
