You often hear people talk about doing "niche research" or "getting into a niche" but what exactly does that mean? And why is it so important?
A niche is the area of expertise that your web site will be regarding.
It's a very small section of a much larger market.
The reason so many people look to get into this specific area of expertise is because it's generally less competitive online.
This means you don't have to compete with millions of websites but rather just the select few that cater to the same theme you're considering working with.
Let's take an example:Let's say you have extensive knowledge in video games, and you've been playing them for quite some time. Then "video games" would be your market.
But note that I said "market" which means that this is the broader area of expertise.
Not a tightly focused section of that market.
In order to find that area of expertise you want to focus on, you need to do some niche research.
Within this video games market, you may be an expert in a certain type of video game; everything from console games to computer games.
If you knew all of the ins and outs of the Xbox 360 for example, this is where you can start to filter down your theme.
What concerning the Xbox 360 are you extremely familiar with?
Is it a certain type of game?
How to fix it?
Tips and tricks you've learned along the way?
Let's say it was a certain kind of video game; say a special role-playing game you have played a lot of and know a lot about.
Now you're getting somewhere!
So far this research has been narrowed down from:Video games to the Xbox 360 to role-playing games.
But what if you could take this even further?
Since you know so much concerning these role-playing games on the Xbox 360 (hypothetically of course), you also probably have knowledge regarding how difficult they are, how expensive they are, what age groups should be playing them and so forth.
It's these specific areas, the difficulty levels, the prices, the proper age groups that could comprise a more focused topic.
And you can do this kind of research with virtually any niche you choose.
Simply take your overall idea and start writing down what you know concerning that idea.
These ideas could come from all of the different experiences you've had with the theme.
From there, it's merely a matter of narrowing down your idea until you've come to a smaller sub-section of that larger broader market.
Once you've done this, you will have your niche.
At this point you can either work on creating your own product that centers around this niche or you can simply take a look at all of the different affiliate networks who will have products available that center around that subject.
From there, it's merely a matter of populating your site with your own personal knowledge and then promoting those products that relate to that niche.
