The Great Wildebeest Migration Kenya| Masai Mara Safaris
The Masai Mara is a large game reserve in south-western Kenya, which is effectively the northern continuation of the Serengeti National Park game reserve in Tanzania an its administered by the local country councils of Transmara and Narok. Named after the Maasai people (the traditional inhabitants of the area) and their description of the area when looked at from a viewpoint - "Mara", which is Maa (Maasai language) for spotted: an apt description for the circles of trees, scrub, savannah and cloud shadows that mark the area. It is famous for its exceptional population of Big Cats, game, and the annual migration of zebra, Thomson's gazelle and wildebeest from the Serengeti every year from July to October, a migration so immense it is called the Great Migration.
June marks the start of the rutting season for the wildebeest and the Kenya Safari Season as the big herds move down on to the short grass plains of the conservation areas of Serengeti and then into the Masai Mara Game Reserve. The rutting bulls, noisily grunting and chasing and fighting rival males for dominance, territory and ultimately access to females is a phenomenon not to be missed while on an African safari. For the Summer Vacation seekers to Africa this is the best place to rest, relax and have fun while watching the gnus.
2010 is a great year to many visitors as they can double the watching of the wildebeest with the South Africa FIFA World Cup.
