A South African Safari With Elephants And Traditional Dancing

Just about the most memorable holidays of my entire life was our 4x4 Botswana safari in 2007. My father is a very outdoorsy person and forever looking for new off-the-beaten-track routes and places to explore. So when he needed a handful of volunteers to join him on his 4x4 Botswana quest, my brother and I jumped aboard immediately!

I've heard many amazing things of Botswana safaris in the past. I've been informed that the Botswana people are amongst the friendliest and most pleasant folks on the planet. And that very few things beat a Botswana sunset. And that the wildlife in that region is something that you have to see for yourself. But nothing has prepared me for the utter beauty that is Botswana!

I have to confess that I am bad with names. If you decide to ask me to mention a couple of the places that we visited on our 4x4 Botswana journey, I will have to admit that I don't really have an idea! Having said that, if you ask me to describe our vacation encounters, I will be able to tell you the following:

We saw a huge group of elephants next to the road! Apparently a group of elephants is termed a memory of elephants and that actually adds up as this is truly a fantastic memory! I think there could have been between 30 and 50 of these majestic animals in one spot, just chilling next to the road, drinking some water and playing in the mud. Even though we were just passing through and pressed for time to reach our destination before dark, we thought we would park next to the road and enjoyed this special treat for the biggest part of an hour!

I'd also be able to tell you of the superb meal we had on our first overnight in the safari camp. I can still remember how absolutely stunning the night sky was on that particular occasion. We were offered a table outside under the stars and marveled at the panorama while enjoying a wonderful dinner - deserved and needed and valued after spending most of the day on the road. The evening was rounded off with a traditional dance display - I'm sure the sound of the percussion were heard miles and miles away and that many Botswana people joined in the festivities from the privacy of their own huts.

Should you wish to explore Botswana or any of the other countries neighbouring South Africa, travelling in a 4 wheel drive is recommended. Do not forget that many of these countries are still in the developing phase and in certain areas they have not yet heard of busses, trains, airplanes or even tar roads! You will also be able to discover some of the more remote areas with a 4x4 and truly experience the culture and history of these intriguing countries.

I hope this post proofs that facts are not important. it's the recollections that count! If you are ever in a position to do a 4x4 Botswana excursion, do not let the opportunity pass by!
