Peripheral the lexicon suggests a lot but the one I liked is AUXILIARY. The word originates from Greece a few centuries back. To explain in short, it is something, which is in the outside.
So how would it be if it can be used in case of computers the modern day machine without which the world will probably stop working?
In the world of computers, you may have heard a lot about peripheral devices. So what are these peripheral devices? These are extra devices which are attached to a computer externally. E.g. keyboard, mouse, printers, scanner, and joystick etc. Get some computer help and learn more about the peripheral devices that your computer have.
So can we do away with these peripheral devices of a computer? Imagine yourself without hands and legs. Can you eat or drink without your hands? Can you move without your legs? The answer is a big NO. Similarly without the keyboard and the mouse the computer is useless. Now many might say what about Light Pens? Well, that is also a peripheral device.
Peripheral devices might be devices which are usually connected to the computer externally. But they are equally important devices without which the computer is of no use. You can't operate a computer without a peripheral.
Let's discuss about a few such important peripheral devices. Knowledge about the same would help you maintain those in a better way. Free help desk support is also available.
Keyboard and Mouse: The Keyboard and Mouse are basic input devices. You do all your typing using the keyboard and all the pointing with the mouse. The keyboard usually has 80 to 110 keys depending upon the type of keyboard. This include the typing keys, function keys, control keys and a numeric keypad. When you press any key it sends a signal to the computer and task is performed. The keyboard originates from the age old typewriter. This keyboard is legendary, known as the QWERTY keyboard. According to legend, this layout, known as QWERTY for its first six letters, helped keep mechanical typewriters' metal arms away from colliding and jamming as people typed.
The mouse is also a peripheral device. It was first launched in the year 1984 by Macintosh and was a massive hit. It mainly translates the movement of your hand to a computer friendly language. The mouse had also evolved of age. First there was the ball mouse with a roller ball at the bottom to sense the movement. Then came the optical mouse which had a laser beam to track the signals. Most recently we have the wireless keyboards and mouse which transmit signals using Bluetooth.
Printers: It is another mechanical device. You can print your data, photos etc. This device has also come of age. Generations have seen various types of printers starting from those sound-emitting dot matrix printers to inkjet to laser printers. There was a time when a HP DeskJet was sold at a whopping $1000 but now you can get an inkjet at a few hundred dollars or less. The laser printer is the latest in the printer market and is most widely used in commercial purpose.
Scanner: It is nothing but a computer dependent photocopy machine. A Scanner won't work without a computer connection to it. Nowadays, standalone copiers have come up in the market which can work as scanners too.
Speakers: As the name suggests, these are used for listening to music mostly.
Joystick: This is used for playing video games.
Memory Card Reader: These are devices which can be fit in a computer or can be plugged in using a USB cable. These are used to load or access data/photos in a memory card.
Microphone: This is used nowadays mostly for voice chat over the internet.
These are the main peripheral devices commonly used. These devices stay mostly outside the computer's periphery, hence the name Peripheral Device.
