Tinnitus is a ringing, swishing, or other type of noise that seems to originate in the ear or head. It is not a single disease, but a symptom of an underlying condition. In the United States, up to fifteen percent of the population suffers from tinnitus, known colloquially as "ringing in the ears." In many cases it is not a serious problem, but rather a nuisance that eventually resolves. It is extremely unpleasant and often interferes with enjoyment of music. It can make verbal communication impossible and can cause depression. What, now, is the best treatment for ear ringing?

Drugs that are known to manage tinnitus include the following: intravenous lidocane, tocainide hydrochloride, GABA-A receptor agonists, anticonvulsants, antidepressants, tranquilizers, muscle relaxants, glycine receptor agonists, acamprosate, NMDA antagonists, neuromuscular blocking drugs, histamine, anti-histamine, vasodilators, diuretics, carbogen, caroverine, alprazolam, knolopin, meclizine, DMSO, vinpocetine, vincamine, hydergine, sodium fluoride, and betahistine hydrochloride (SERC).
Other treatment modalities, however, include surgery, biofeedback, acupuncture, stress reduction, hearing aids, cranial sacral therapy, electrical stimulation, surgically severing the auditory nerves, hyperbaric oxygen therapy, feedback therapy, auditory integration training, sound therapy, hypnotherapy, and homeopathic remedies. Most treatments are still in the experimental stage. The most promising areas of research at the moment are sound therapy, neck exercises, and acupuncture. Acupuncture has produced dramatic success in cases of somatic tinnitus that were not accompanied by hearing loss.
As for alternative medicine treatments, we have ginkgo biloba, zinc, magnesium, and magnets. Ginkgo biloba is supposed to act as a vasodilator, and may improve blood circulation in regions near the cochlea that have been stressed by noise trauma. Magnesium is a very promising new treatment for noise-induced hearing loss which often causes tinnitus.
However, the best treatment for ear ringing is probably good nutrition. Good general nutrition is important for recovery from any type of injury, including injury that produces tinnitus.
