A few years ago, rekindled Bigs our love affair with an arcade sports game, revitalize rather conservative world of baseball. From the simple-to-play-hard to master gameplay to the elegant use of strategic planning (not to mention beautiful visuals), it established itself as the best of the best when it comes to non-traditional sporting affairs.Unfortunately, while its sequel shines on consoles this season, a bit of that awesomeness is lost in translation to PSP.

Say what you will about Sony's handheld, it's usually a powerhouse of sports games. That is what is really so disappointing about The Bigs 2, while the intrinsic action on the track retains much of the charm and intensity of console cousins, there is a lack of saliva-n-polish and black, which reduce the overall package very more than we expected. Unexplained blurred transition screens and a disjointed, awkward so-it's-distracting play-by-play commentary come together to ratchet down the experience a few notches. What's worse is the lack of multiplayer options, regardless of how well the developers craft single-player campaign, a game like The Bigs is always better against a comrade. Not having this option, wounds our souls.
To be fair, on-field action is solid. It will not take long to nail down a basic framework, pitching and fielding, but have mastered these baseball art takes time and practice. It's not just about your athletic ability, either, every game is a tense back-and-forth game of chess that ebb and flow with each at-bat. Chooses when to use hard earned turbo increases at the right time - not to mention executing even harder-to-get Big Heat pitches or Big Blast at-bats - will get you scheming and planning from the get-go.
Single-player Legends Challenge is mostly a copy-paste from the original title. You can create a character and build him up over a number of challenges in regular games and mini games, with the goal of becoming a World Series champion. It's certainly entertaining and full of variety, but apart from a couple of implied changes, it's basically the same things we played last time. The remaining features are standard exhibitions, a "pick-up game allows you to quickly match up lineups created on the fly, and a Home Run Derby. Nothing inspiring, to say the least.

We are totally in love with The Bigs 2 on consoles, but just do not feel it on the PSP. It could have and should have had more to do, especially in the multiplayer arena. When it comes to baseball on the small screen, you're better off sticking with the sublime Show.
