Sometimes a change of scenery can make a world of good. In a change from the barren deserts of the original game, and the tropical climes sequel Pacific Rift looks Arctic Edge MotorStorm Series goes through a cold snap. It's an amazing transformation, but it is most welcome. Tracks are noticeably slippery places, occasional avalanches bury unwary vehicles, and you can cool your boost meter by driving through deep snow. But the color scheme is the most noticeable change: from dull brown mud track to the treacherous mountain trails cake in the snow. It looks like a completely new

But under the white blanket, very little else has changed. Sure, there are a few new vehicles that are better suited to weathering, but they do not believe that different behind the wheel. Arctic Edge consists of the same conditions, we have come to expect from the series: race, speed events, time trials and online multiplayer, if you feel like it. Start it up and you will see a confusing number of events to attend, but there are only a dozen tracks, recycled with ramped-up AI and different weather conditions. Twelve steps are plenty, but the new snow-covered setting makes a lot of the tracks feel a bit too samey for our taste.
Early events are ridiculously easy, so easy we wondered for a moment if a glitch had deleted the other competitors. It had not - AI gets a lot smarter, as you rank up, which makes discovering shortcuts are a must. Arctic Edge lacks a lot of wow factor PS3 games had, but it's a nice looking game for a handheld. That said, the smaller screen - and reduced resolution - can sometimes make navigation difficult, especially when using insights.
This may be the same MotorStorm we already know, but just shift in hardware - for the PSP and PS2 - was perhaps the only change was needed. MotorStorm is still a fantastic racing title, and Bigbig have managed to recreate everything we loved it. It's fast, smart, fairly pretty amazing - without doubt one of the best racing game on PSP.Arctic Edge can not reinvent the wheel, but the change of scenery (and platform) have done wonders.
