Reissues and restores are naturally meant to stoke flames geek fanboys, but the ulterior motive of reviving old games are attracting an audience unfamiliar with the cash to drop. This built-in audience ensure sales for game developers and publishers, so anyone else who digs Redux is obligated to purchase more of the same series. Ys I & II Chronicles for PSP is the ideal example of the kind of game that should have remained lost in time - this is not the kind of game that will drive other than blind faith.

When Legacy of Ys: Books I & II hit the DS two years ago, we wondered anyone bother to publish Falcom's 20-odd-year-old role-playing. See the same game on the PSP two years later confuse us further. The value of two-RPG-in-one certainly has a strong support if you are looking for reassurance and a reason for pulling the trigger. Buy and play Ys I & II Chronicles is a huge waste of time and money.

This is disappointing considering how well the remakes of the other old ass Ys Game Seven and The Oath in Felghana, managed to PSP. They hit on two ends of the spectrum - one a massive game with a scary amount of dungeons and prey, the other a rapid and linear action game that does not slow down for anyone. Ys I & II Chronicles fail not because it does not live up to those good remakes, but because it suffers from a debilitating ailment, it can not do anything about.

This is a game that is definitely a product of its time. As a genre - and series - has moved forward since its initial release, what once worked eroded and broken. These games are boring, confusing and uncompromisingly dull. The vague objectives with fewer instructions are almost acceptable in relation to the struggle that involves something more than moving into an enemy to attack. This is Walking: The Video Game - you can literally get through a dungeon doing nothing more than wiggling the analog core.

Unlockable magic lend some variety to the otherwise stale battles with idiot squid monsters and typical fantasy fodder. Beyond that, this is a stagnant RPG with something to offer everyone who is not already obsessed with the original game, 2001-PC remake this is based, or DS remake from 2009. It's a lot of reissues, and if it has not tapped into an unseen market and caused a Ys craze right now, we doubt the sad and boring will try again either.
