So you're graduating, or perhaps getting excited about your upcoming prom. Going prom dress shopping is super-exciting, until you hit the stores and realize that all the other girls you know are out looking at the same dresses. You want to look great in your grad dress but not be wearing the same thing as anyone else. So what should you do?
The first step is to take a look at what is in fashion for prom dresses and graduation dresses this season. While you want to be unique and not wear the identical dress as someone at your school, you also don't want to be wearing something utterly different. For instance, if short skirts are in and you show up wearing a ballgown style, you will feel out of place. Every year the styles change, and stores eager for your business will have fresh fashions available. Some years will see long, flowing dresses in style, and others you'll find shorter trends. There are also different trends for different occasions and ages. Try and get a feel for what your friends are going to wear and then go for something unique and flattering to you specifically, within that trend or style niche.
To avoid a same-dress fiasco, once you have an idea what basic style you want, consider going outside of the 'normal' shopping circles. If you live in a small town, try going to a nearby city for more selection, for instance. Go to a different mall than usual, shop for grad and prom dresses online, or even have a seamstress make a dress for you from a picture or idea you have.
Remember, though, that at the end of the day the girl wearing the dress is far more important than the dress itself. Your shoes, hair, make-up and accessories will all be different even if you end up wearing a dress that is identical to another girl's. Be sure and enjoy your special evening for all it's worth, and make memories with your friends that will last a lifetime, long after you've forgotten about what you wore!
