subject: Stained Floors Are Not A Bad Thing [print this page]

Usually a stained floor is a big dealUsually a stained floor is a big deal. There are usually visions of a dark spot or worse, a big red spot on a floor. A stain might be where something spilled and removed the finish on wood and resulted in the exposed wood being stained by everyday use. Even vinyl or linoleum flooring can look stained if something very hot spilled on it. So when is a stained floor not a bad thing? When it is a stained concrete floor. The stains that are available for a concrete floor can be simple and monotone throughout the flooring or it can be an artistic intricate design. The range of color that a cement floor can be stained is endless. Each floor is unique because concrete is a natural substance so there are always some variations to the color that cannot be controlled.

A stained concrete floor can be so beautiful and artfully done that many people standing on it dont even realize that they are standing on a concrete floor. Concrete floors were typically plain gray or had a layer of easily peeled paint and for those who have not kept up with the advances in cement flooring, they are likely to believe concrete floors are still limited in decorator options.

Concrete stains are sometimes referred to as concrete dyes or concrete tints, even though they are different. They can be mixed and controlled to the extent that beautiful art work and faux finishes can be created. The one color that is difficult to achieve on concrete is white, but it can be done. The range of colors for concrete floors includes the following:

Pastels

Earth tones

Vibrant colors

Dark colors

Bright primary colors

Deep colors

Acid staining is another way that color is added to a concrete floor. The acid will add a variegated design.

Stains are preferred over dyes on heavily used concrete floors and outdoor areas. Stains are UV stable and are easy to work with. When a dye or tint is added to a concrete floor it has to be precise because of the way they absorb into the cement. A dyed concrete floor will need a sealant and wax to protect the design underneath. The types of sealants that are compatible with dyes include the following: water-based sealers, solvent-based sealers, and urethane-based sealers.

Even in a warehouse you may find detailed designs on the concrete floors. Usually it is near the truck or pedestrian entrance and may be the company logo or a meaningful motto. If there is a customer pickup area, there may be decorative stains used in that area while the rest of the warehouse has a protective coating or simple staining.

When concrete floors are resurfaced with a thin coat, stains can be added to create beautiful concrete floors.
