Having lived in Denver, CO for more than twenty years I was genuinely weary of the winters. As expected, we regularly were also putting our golf equipment away in late October and it wasn't coming out of the closet until sometime in April. Apart from when we would make winter visits to Phoenix! How terrific it was to play golf in wonderful sunny conditions in January, one word... astounding!
Well, as I said, we have now lived in Phoenix for over six years and have played countless "Valley of the Sun" golf courses. I most likely prefer summer golf just because of the cheap rates(of course tee off at sun up). But there are not a lot of places in the Country were you can play golf in the winter months. Phoenix is one place where you can. Here is a short list of my favorite winter golf courses in Phoenix. I am going to break it up into three different types, low-cost, moderately priced and high-priced.
Let's begin with low-cost which translates into under $50. One of the least pricey is Apache Creek golf course located in Apache Creek right off Freeway 60. This course is kept in nice condition and has a desert landscape. You can get on Apache Creek usually for less than $35, this is a genuinely great deal. My next vote could be Kokopelli, this is a very fine golf course located in Gilbert where winter rates are customarily right about $45. Next, located in Mesa I would pick either View Point or Painted Mountain, equally good courses that you can get on for less than $50.
Moving to the moderately priced courses my initial pick would be Superstition Springs located in Mesa. This is an extremely good course with amazing views and you customarily expect to give about $65 a round. Next would be the 500 Club located in North Phoenix, good course, wonderful views and priced about $65. A golf course I greatly endorse is Las Sendas in North Mesa. This is a incredibly difficult, stunning course with amazing views. Winter charges are ordinarily in the $90 range.
On to the expensive courses and there are quite a few to pick from. Number one is going to be the Dinosaur course in Gold Canyon. This is ranked in the top five of all public courses in Arizona and is a must play. Green fees will set you backabout $150. Next in line would be TPC Scottsdale stadium course. The PGA Tour makes a stop here each February. Green fees can be high-priced at $200+ but it is worth playing at least once. Last but not least is a course proudly locatedin North Scottsdale named The Boulders, spectacular views along with a wonderful golf course and green fees run approximately $150.
I hope some of these recommendations aid you with your Phoenix winter golf options. There is currently much competition between golf courses for your golfing dollar so this will be a fantastic year for the winter golf visitor. Expect to see you on the course!
