There are so many things to do when optimizing a website that it's no wonder most sites get off on the wrong foot and, perhaps, de-optimize their sites! If business owners knew how easy it actually is to optimize a basic site, they would get the job done, quicker, more efficiently and... better.
But, just how do you learn to optimize? Well, there is a lot of information online. All kinds of ideas and instructions. All kinds of forums. All kinds of blogs. You can learn a little here and a little there from these sources. If you read all you can on a daily basis you will get all the information, albeit, at a very slow pace. Most sites that offer SEO tips and advice will eventually cover most of the topics of SEO. Once you get all the basics down, and done... the focus turns to off-site work, which leaves less to know, but much more actual work to be done.
There are of course, courses, and training sites. Some are quite expensive and some are reasonable. Some are just plain rubbish. My personal experience led me through several different sites that offered what they claimed to be courses or training to learn SEO. Never did I really ever find anything that actually taught me what to do. There was a lot of reference to things, like meta tags, title tags and more, but never did any of these sites actually spell out exactly how to use these tags. I was really left to my own whims and, so it seems, made every mistake in the book. I was lucky though, back when I learned these things the internet was different. Google didn't exist and the algorithms were much, much simpler than they are today. There was an engine back then, InfoSeek, that was an "instant indexing" engine. You could submit your URL and then search for your keywords and actually find your site. The beauty was that you could revise your site, submit it again, and then search again. Doing this over and over, with the correct SEO effort, would bring your site up to #1. I did this over and over and attained top listings for every keyword I worked with.
This was good training for SEO as it showed me exactly what changes needed to be done to get a site listed. At one time I found that I had all 30 of the top 30 listings on Excite for some keywords. It actually scared me when I saw this because I figured they would find out and ban me. LOL! Such things to worry about!
Learning all this today is not such an easy task, but it can still be free. I suggest subscribing to all of the SEO feeds and newsletters that you can find. As time goes by you can unsubscribe to those that are not performing for you. Keep the ones that are. Search on the engines for SEO information and look for courses and classes. The information is all there, you just need to located it. I suggest that as you find tidbits of information, copy and paste it into a file that you can refer to. Eventually you'll have a lot of notes and things will begin to make sense.
