Flomax 4 mg Can Ease Symptoms Associated with Enlarged Prostate

Flomax is manufactured by Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals, Inc. and its generic name is Tamsulosin. This medication belongs to a group of medications known as alpha 1A receptor antagonists. It is used in treating symptoms of enlarged prostate (or benign prostatic hyperplasia/ BPH in medical terminology).

Why will Flomax be Prescribed

When the prostate gland enlarges, it puts pressure on the urethra (the tube that carries urine away from the bladder to be expelled), which results in a weak urine stream or an uncomfortable sensation that the bladder has not been completely emptied. Flomax helps relax the muscles in the prostate and the opening of the bladder, which aids the urine to flow more freely. This miracle drug eases difficulty in passing urine and reduces excess frequency of urination too.

Few Contra Indications

Patients with hypersensitivity to tamsulosin hydrochloride, a history of orthostatic hypotension or severe hepatic insufficiency should not take Flomax. The physician needs to rule out whether prostate cancer is present before starting you off on Flomax. Enlarged prostate patients who might be undergoing cataract surgery will need to temporarily stop taking the medication until after the surgery as the medication can affect the pupil. Patients with renal and liver problems should explore how this medication could impact their medical condition; how Flomax will react to existing renal/liver condition and so on with the physician. Flomax can also lower your blood pressure, which results in dizziness because of which the physician needs to evaluate your blood pressure and prostate regularly. Exercising in hot weather or allowing the body to perspire excessively may set off a dizzy spell. Drinking alcohol along with this medication may cause the side-effects to be magnified. People with muscular dystrophy should not take this medication. As it is a drug for men's enlarged prostate, women and children should never take this drug.

Side-Effects

The most common side effects in patients using Flomax regularly are:

Abnormal ejaculation

Runny or stuffy nose

Dizziness

Skin rash

Urticaria

Respiratory trouble

Symptoms of infection, for example, flu/cold/cough

Flomax might cause orthostatic hypotension, which is low blood pressure upon rising from a prone position. If you get an onset of dizziness or weakness, rest until the feeling has passed. In case you have a fainting spell you need to keep the doctor informed. If you experience fainting, contact your doctor as soon as possible.

There is a possibility of some more serious side-effects such as chest pain, fainting and priapism, and patients need to consult their physicians on experiencing any of these potentially dangerous symptoms. Flomax is also known to weaken the sex drive and your physician might provide erection enhancing drugs along with Flomax.

Recommended Dosage

The physician recommended dose for Flomax controlled-release tablets is once daily, right after breakfast. Do not break or chew the tablets, but swallow whole. Taking a double dose in the case of a missed dose is not advised.

Storage

Keep the medication away from children, pets, heat and moisture. It can be stored at room temperature below 30 degree centigrade.
