Hammock, a way to get some sleep in this burning summer

The origin of the hammock is generally accepted as being from the Maya culture of Central America, approximately 1000 years ago.

The Indians slept in a bed they called an 'hamaca' which looked like a piece of cloth with both an open and tight weave, like a net. It was made of cotton, about 2.5 or 3 yards long, with many henequen twine strings at either end which could have been hung at any height. They made good beds and were clean, and since the weather was warm they require no covers at all. They were portable so a child could carry it over the arm.

The shape and sewing technique of the traditional hammock hasn't changed much over the years, proof, therefore, of the extraordinary creativity and inspiration of these people.

Hammocks have always been popular in exotic and tropical countries due to their usage in the heat, not only during hot nights but also as a resting place for the day time, totally replacing the traditional bed.

The hammock was perfected in the Caribbean and Brazil and was first introduced to Europeans during Columbus' first voyage of 1492. Over time hammocks have grown in popularity in homes and gardens across Europe as a place to relax and sleep.

The beginning of August 2010, it's been said, will see a two-week spell of the hottest weather the UK has ever seen, breaking even the highest temperatures recorded in Brogdale, near Faversham, Kent, on August 10, 2003 - 38.5c (101.3f). With this forecast what better way to cope with the heat and enjoy the great outdoors than investing in a hammock? Whether through those scorching days or sweltering nights, lie in a hammock and enjoy!
