Football may not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think about portable gaming, but that has not stopped EA Sports from bringing its perennial international contender for the PSP yet again. It brings to an improved animation system, Be A Pro Seasons and other slight improvements that help make this a worthy addition to the FIFA family.
Curiously Be A Pro mode in FIFA 12 on PSP is the best Be A Pro to the game, regardless of the system. It is a bit more forgiving in its design and the player progression is enhanced by the fact that you actually increase your role and gain new abilities as your career picks up steam. Unlike versions on other systems, giving FIFA 09 on PSP you to unlock things like calling for a shot that calls for a through ball, becoming a free kick taker and finally team management. There are several other influences that can be earned over time and it is by far the best sense of progression any of the Be A Pro mode.
The camera angle also works better on PSP than it does on PS3. It comes with a display that shows positive and negative results from your game, and there are signs that pop up over your head when you call for certain passes. I also found it a little easier to get in on the action on the PSP. The field is not feel as expansive on the smaller screen which makes it much easier to feel involved in the action.
The area has some new animations that work their way into, and a feeling of more physical play. Players do a better job of jostling for balls and knocking into each other when they run up the field. There is also a new shot meter that reduces the former frustrations from the overly touchy-face button.
My only real problem with the gameplay of FIFA Soccer 12 is that through balls and passing do not feel as fluid as they could. Through balls are not nearly as effective as they are on consoles, making it slightly harder to put the ball in the back of the net.

Other cool additions to FIFA 12 on PSP are interactive online leagues (good luck finding someone to play) and Soccer IQ 2.0 which asks you questions that increase in difficulty as you go. It adapts the questions to start asking about your favorite team and then expand from there. It is well designed and fun for a long plane trip.
FIFA 12 looks and sounds very similar to what you remember from last year's game.Everything from the menu presentation to the default camera angle and player models have remained the same. Animations have been expanded a bit, and there are some changes in the user interface, but for the most part things are identical. The same goes for comments and sound effects that are performing well enough. Thankfully EA Sports seems to have fixed, at least most, the problem of loading audio clips during gameplay.It is much more homogeneous than it was before.
