In the air, feel good stuff. The plane is easy to maneuver and D-pad's special moves as barrel rolls and immediate 180s are welcome additions. Occasionally, the matches get a bit dull as you 180-degree flip behind even a fighter and take him down, but the ability to launch Daxter to fly to a QuickTime minigame, where he strips aircraft parts to break up the monotony of reducing the usual villains.
A question that applies to dogfighting (and a little bit of platforming) are pacing. It looks like the developers just do not know when they finish designing games. At some point you have to take a tower defense guarding a coastline. This is a gigantic wall that consists of three different parts of the guns firing like mad. You cut down all the guns in one area, the guys a missile Daxter jumps on and takes forever to hack it, and you're the pilot back into the control network to blast the part of defense.

First time I did it, it was fun. The second time it was getting a bit long. The third time, Daxter lost his grip on the last part of the missile and I had to make the entire stretch to take the last tower defense again. Fourth time I was ready for finishing this quest ever and typing mean anything about it on internet.
Without spoiling too much, the last battle in the game very much like it as well. Three things happen again and again and again until you win. The first few times is fine, but there came a point where I was rolling my eyes as the fight went another round.
Parasite a bit out of the pacing, the story is slightly above it all in this one. You team up with some sky pirates early, meet someone who will be important, but is pretty forgettable, I did not know what happened to James and Keira to the bitter end of the game, and so on. It's just not an exciting story. Now you come? No, I can not remember the original Jak having much time in the form of the story, and I was confused as all hell by the end of Jak II. What I remember about those games is that they were a blast to play. The Lost Frontier is not as good, but it gives you the reversion moments platforming era gone by.
The third and final gameplay type we need to get into is Dark Daxter. Yes, in this game our orange friend gets dosed with a bunch of Dark Eco and mutated into an 8-foot, bristling backed version of himself. He speaks as Hulk can hurl Eco balls, and can smash through almost anything in his tornado fashion.
Jak guns are back, but his new powers are cooler.
I make no bones about it: I hated Dark Daxter when I had shown The Lost Frontier because of his crappy dialogue, broken puzzle and lame visuals. To his credit, fixed High Impact Games a mass in the final version of the game. Daxter's dialogue has been touched up to not be so annoying, the puzzles you are working, and are pretty easy to fly through and threw a spider on a hole to create a web bridge does not look all that bad.Do not get me wrong, I still think it is the weakest part of the game and found the parts where Daxter's slide down the sewer ridiculous, but there are very few examples of having to play like this monster, and when you do it is not all that bad.
Probably one of the good things The Lost Frontier has going for it is a handful of good ol 'old-fashioned side missions. For each city or region where you pilot your big pirate ship in the sky, you will find anyone willing to pay you to help. There is a bartender who need you to jump-slam nails into the ground that a pirate radio DJ who needs you to take down an incoming trailer, and more. These missions can be repeated - almost all the pirate radio them I was flying out to a similar place to blow up like appearance ships - but the rewards of scrap metal and Precursor balls (yep, you can trade with eggs for all types of game-changing locks up, like big head mode) is welcome if you want to upgrade your fleet or Jak himself.
Although James can not transform into his other self anymore, he still collects Eco from fallen enemies. He can take this goo that Keira and upgrade his health, his movements and so on. My first playthrough took me a little more than seven hours and I was only able to buy all the upgrades in two of the four categories, so there is a reason to play the game if you have some fun - especially because after beat the title you can play through on Hero Mode, a harder difficulty, which brings all your items, powers and upgrades.
Outside of gameplay, one disappointment for me how empty the world Jak and Daxter exist in feeling this way. When I was stomping through underground pirate town, it was basically just my footfalls I heard. There was no surrounding hollow noise, chatter from the groups of people in the bar, there was no sign of life other than people stood around static. Occasionally, I'd go a pirate and hear him say something like "And a bottle of rum," but this was even more jarring because it seemed to be the only recorded line and it did nothing calmer when I moved away from him. The game is beautiful in parts with rich graphics and some nice details, but most environments look the same and no one seems to be alive.
