I often like to start my reviews by mentioning a few moments from the game that really nails my point home. So here goes.
The random name generator for Gladiator Begins christened me "Genitanus." And so my journey into the romantic world gladiator began.
Gladiator Begins is a third-person games, holds some bizarre middle ground between character action games like God of War and fighters as Tekken (give me a second and I'll explain). You will be presented with myriad weapons and armor options, generally with complete freedom to arm yourself as you want. Want to use two swords? Go for it.A spear and shield? Cool story, bro. The full range of Gladiator weapons are present, including punch daggers and the like.
Each weapon type and the combination is particularly combos and special moves, and use weapons combinations will unlock new abilities to loadout. Combat in its most basic level is about attacking the right or left, or high and low (see previous Tekken reference).Since armor is mostly scattered and weight limits usually prevent enemies from marching into battle like walking tanks (usually), you would want to give priority to hit your opponent where they are weakest.

As mentioned before, there is indeed a lot of strategy involved in Gladiator Begins' fight, which is good - it's all there is in this game. Gladiator Begins "The problem is that it relies on a mechanic who shows signs of strain later in the game. Finally did my two sword fighter not even need to rely on a meaningful strategic choice to butcher most of his opponents. I just wanted vicious combo their heads back up to let my stamina recover, and then cartwheel forward again in an attack that my victims would never block. Or maybe they just could not - cheesing my way through the games had a certain appeal, until I found myself itself subjected to the same tactics as enemies whose attacks seem antilock (not surprising, given how inconsistent blocking Gladiator Begins s) and was pounded into a bloody mess in the corner of the "arena" until I fought the impulse to throw my PSPgo across my desk. And at least once, can not I have successfully fought this impulse.
Maybe things would have been different if Arenas had actually felt like the epic Bloodsport theaters old. Instead, they felt like fighting in a small apartment with a sunroof. This is a kind of sign of Gladiator Begins, actually: There is a huge list of "elements" in the game, but most of them are ultimately meaningless. Each arena feel the same. The leveling mechanic is aimless - if you try to highlight any skill over the other, so you'll probably find yourself knocking on the next match and you will fight to load an old save undo foolish decision to try to do your gladiator Excel on one thing.
At least the game looks quite good, most of the time. You've got a lot of visual customization options, though these are superficial and frankly a little puzzling - goes from Gladiator Begins' character generator, the difference between an "average" female and a "muscular" woman is primarily its larger breasts, and the difference between a "average" man and a "muscular" male is primarily its larger breasts. Battles are bloody and well animated.
But there is a strange lack of voice in the game. This can be a blessing in disguise, though. Much like my experience with name generator attempts to give me an "authentic" sounding gladiator name, try dialogue in Gladiator Starting to sound serious and come off as ridiculous. There are long stretches of banal text referring to the glory arena and Roman politics (or at least what movies from the last thirty years have had to say about these things) without actually saying anything. These sections will occasionally give you a choice whether to help a patron or knock them down, but these relationships never develop, it's just another game.
Concluding remarks
Gladiator Begins is a strong idea, stumbles in the execution in the long run. While the deep equipment options and versatile combat is appreciated, the random hard ups and downs, practical (and perhaps blessed, I suppose) non-existent story, and ultimately fatiguing lack of real gameplay variety makes it hard to recommend.
