Best Places for Black Singles

If you're black and single, it helps to be in a city that has a strong black culture, not just a large population. Going out to meet people at places and events black people frequent is still one of the best ways to find that special someone.

Atlanta

In Atlanta, or "Hot Lanta" as it's often called, the number of black women slightly outnumber men, but the city is teeming with professional black men and women--439 of the Fortune 500 companies are based here. It's not unusual to see many well-heeled black singles behind the wheels of BMWs, Mercedes-Benzes and Lexuses. Atlanta is home to several historically black colleges and universities, including Clark, Morris Brown, the all-male Morehouse College and all-female Spelman College.

You'll find a lot of singles working out at the Downtown Athletic Club. In Buckhead, a chic area north of downtown, check out the cafes, stores and clubs where black singles congregate. On weekends, singles troll Lenox Mall to shop--not just for clothes, but also for that special someone.

Washington D.C.

They don't call Washington D.C. "chocolate city" for nothing. Black people make up 70 percent of the city's population and more than 400,000 black people make their home here. Most are well educated and climbing the corporate ladder. Notable companies in the city include Xerox, IBM and American Express. Since D.C. is also the center of our nation's government, many come to the district to work on Capitol Hill. It's home to the highest concentration of black college graduates in the nation.

Washington D.C. houses Howard, Georgetown and Catholic Universities. The law libraries at Howard and Georgetown are overrun with young attorneys, as are the medical schools populated with unattached residents. Jog the Memorial Bridge between noon and 2 p.m and you're sure to find a lot of prospective dates.

Chicago

The city President Barack Obama calls home has almost 50 colleges, universities and professional institutes making it a magnet for black singles. The black community in Chicago is entrenched and close knit--the Chicago Defender, the city's black-owned newspaper, is the only black daily in the nation.Chicago's convention and trade show center and its sporting events like Bulls and Bears games, attract many more singles. Chicago is great for concerts, including blues, jazz, R&B or classical. On any given day, you'll find a show somewhere in the city, along with a lot of single blacks in attendance.

San Diego

In San Diego, single black men actually outnumber single black women. There are 100 eligible black men between the ages of 18 and 34 for every 57 single black woman. The large cachet of black men can be attributed to military, government and industry positions, as well as a bevy of African and Caribbean men.

Check out the officers' parties where many of the single military officers are found. Single women frequent the art gallery openings. San Diego is close to Los Angeles and the Mexican border--the beach and the mountains are nearby and there are a ton of activities to keep singles occupied.
