It is well known that couples do not just suddenly break up. There is normally a number of stages that they go through that will lead to a break up and they can vary couple to couple. If your break up came as a shock to you, you may not have been paying attention to what was going on. You should have been able to notice when things were going wrong and had a chance to stop it.
You might notice that your partner is seeing less and less of you and spending more time with their friends and family. This may indicate an issue with your relationship. How do the two of you interact together? Do you fight a lot and it is getting worse? Always fighting and arguing over something never accomplishes anything and will lead to a break up when one person cannot take any more of it.
Do you trust your partner or do you always demand to know where they are going or what they are doing? If your partner has never given you a reason not to trust them why would you do this? You must have faith that they are doing the right thing, if you are constantly questioning them about what they are up to they will grow tired of it and move on.
Do you and your partner share the same interests? Many couples have nothing in common and this can create a problem, such as not getting to know each other as well as they could. If your partner at least makes an effort to show interest in the things you do, it shows they do care about you. You may not want to participate in all of your partners hobbies, but at least showing some interest is a positive thing to do.
What if your partner asks for a trial separation? This could be a sign they want to break up but can't bring themselves to do it outright. It could also just mean they need some time to themselves to sort things out and nothing more. If your partner brings this up you can agree but ask if they would be willing to go to counseling with you. This would show them you care about keeping the relationship intact.
If you are having issues with your partner you cannot force them to love you. You can show them you care and want to make the relationship work and ask that they work with you to reach this goal. Do not act desperate or try to manipulate them as this will only make your situation worse and you will experience the final stages of a break up.
