At times, designers find it quite hard to determine when is it proper to use contemporary style and when is it proper to use traditional. The solution to this problem, however, is quite simple: the blending of these decorating ideas into one which is popularly referred to as the transitional style.
What is Transitional Style?
Transitional Style is the borderline between traditional and contemporary styles. Since it combines both traditional and contemporary styles, transitional rooms feature elegant, sophisticated and eclectic interior designs. The lines are less ornate than traditional ones but are not as simple as contemporary. People who use transitional style are taken with contemporary furniture and a minimum of accessories.
There are two general sub types which include casual and eclectic. The casual resembles the elements of the classic yet is cozy without being overly hip. On the other hand, the eclectic freely borrows from several styles and integrates it into one interior design.
As distinguished from contemporary furniture, transitional touches more on practicality and comfort in order to meet the lifestyle of an active household.
The following are basic concepts and ideas necessary in understanding the transitional style:
Colours
Usually, the colour of the palettes are very subtle and monochromatic making them very suitable for bathroom design ideas, living room design ideas and bedroom design ideas. This gives the relaxing effect that people are looking for while resting. The colours used in transitional design usually include: ivory, taupe, beige, tan, and chocolate. Accent colours may also be used but with moderation because the intention is to let the eye rest and thus, create a more comforting space.
Furnishings
Generally, it is best to keep furnishings understated in transitional styles. The key in making sure that the space feels balanced and appropriate is proper scale. Furniture must not be too masculine or too feminine. Transitional style fits well with either Shaker style or Mission style furniture. Their straight clean lines and wood tones compliment the design.
Textiles
Repeating the colour scheme throughout the room is done by placing rugs, pillows and throws, drapes, and others of the like. These textiles are important in transitional design because they add texture and character to the space. Some of the fabrics which may be used include: micro fiber suede, chenille, cotton, twill, leather, denim, silk, corduroy and tweed.
Accessories
Transitional Style requires a minimalist approach in selecting accessories. Example of accessories which are deemed suitable to transitional style include: an orchid placed in a pot arching in front of a window, light coloured mats in dark coloured frames, an oval wooden tray meant for equally shaped candleholders.
As stated earlier, interior design ideas do not have to be a choice between contemporary style and traditional style. A combination of the two would do especially for those who simply want to integrate contemporary designs into their traditional structures.
