Driving In Winter Weather with care

During the winter months it is essential that drivers are extra cautious out on the roads. Ice, fog, snow and rain can make driving conditions extremely dangerous. This is why being patient and driving safely at all times could help avoid unnecessary and sometimes fatal traffic collision. As well as always being alert and attentive when driving in the winter weather, there are a number of tips that can help take you safely through the winter months.

First of all when preparing to travel make sure you get up at least 10 minutes earlier so you can prepare the car, and make sure ALL windows are clear before setting off. Leaving a small hole cleared on your windscreen for you to see out of can severely block your vision of the road and surrounding cars. Also make sure that your car is fully stocked up with de-icer fluid, has a ice scraper and blankets. It is also important to make sure before setting off on any journey that your mobile phone has full battery and you have warm clothes in the car because if you break down in the countryside it could be hours before someone reaches you and without any warm clothes this could be a very unpleasant experience.

When driving through adverse weather conditions always remember that the stopping distance of cars in ice and snow is 10 times longer, so make sure you leave plenty of space between you and the car in front and when stopping gently press the brake down and ease into a stop. When you are driving uphill it is important to try and avoid stopping on the hill, therefore leave plenty of room between you and the car in front and maintain a constant speed choosing the most suitable gear beforehand, to avoid having to change it on the hill.

Finally, through the winter months dazzle from the low sun can affect your vision on the roads, improve the vision from your car by thoroughly cleaning the inside and outside of your windscreens. Scratches and chips on the outside can exacerbate the low sun. Use your air conditioning system to reduce condensation on cold windows a lot quicker, this can be particularly helpful in the mornings if you are in the rush. Overall you can safely drive through these winter months if just a bit more caution is taken by drivers on the road, always remember that other drivers may not be as a safe as you, so be weary of other drivers and enjoy the winter season safely.
