Choosing Bridesmaid Dresses

Selecting dresses for bridesmaids is one of hundreds of choices a bride must make for her wedding. It can be as time consuming as choosing the bride's own gown. There are dozens of websites devoted to bridesmaid dresses including large chain wedding boutiques. There are bridal shops in every state that offer a full line of dresses for the entire wedding party, from the bride to the bride's mother to the flower girl, to the bridesmaids. One option is to also consider other retailers that sell dresses, even if the dresses are not specifically labeled as "bridesmaid."

Another aspect of choosing bridesmaids dresses is determining color and style. Will the dresses follow the wedding colors? Will they be strapless? Full length? The location of the wedding as well as the season during which the ceremony will take place are important factors to consider. Bridesmaids shouldn't be wearing short strapless dresses in the dead of winter. Consider the comfort of the bridesmaids, who are often the bride's closest female friends.

Brides should also think about what activities the bridesmaids will perform in their dresses. If they will be dancing at the reception a strapless or full-length gown is not conducive to movement. Additionally, bridesmaids do not all have to wear the same exact dress. They could wear the same color, varying colors, or varying styles as long as the dresses all coordinate with the bride's overall theme for the wedding.

Price is another variable when it comes to bridesmaid dresses. Traditionally, the bridesmaids pay for dresses themselves. It is courteous for the bride to select dresses that fit her bridesmaids' budget. Unless the bridesmaids are extremely wealthy and like such extravagance, asking them to purchase $600 dresses that they will likely only wear once is ridiculous.

Shopping for and getting fitted for the dresses can be a bonding experience for the bride and bridesmaids. This bonding time is beneficial, especially if some of the bridesmaids do not already know each other. It can be a fun time for women to try on a variety of pretty dresses and "play dress up" like they did as little girls.

After the bridesmaids' dresses have been chosen, they must be properly fitted to make sure they are the right length, do not bunch or gather in an awkward way, etc. It is important to use a trusted seamstress to get the right fit and make sure the bridesmaids look picture perfect when they stand beside the bride on the big day.
