Deccan Chargers won the 2nd edition of the IPL

The second edition of the Indian Premier League was to be held in India as per plans but the centre elections all across the country meant that the government refused to provide security to the IPL. This meant that the tournament had to be shifted out of the country and they were held in South Africa.

JOHANNESBURG: Deccan Chargers won the second edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) beating Royal Challengers Bangalore by six runs in the final at the New Wanderers

There were eight sides which played in this second edition of the World Cup as well, the same ones that had played in the first edition of the tournament. These included Mumbai Indians, Delhi Daredevils, Chennai Super Kings, Kolkata Knight Riders, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Deccan Chargers, Rajasthan Royals and Kings XI Punjab.

Punjab were knocked out early, while the Mumbai Indians also struggled to get going. However, the worst performers were the Kolkata Knight Riders, who had changed their captain from Sourav Ganguly to Brendon McCullum.

McCullum found things hot to handle from the very beginning and the side went from one loss to another and were pushed to the eighth spot when the tournament ended. They hardly had a win to their name and Ganguly was reinstated as the captain by the time the third edition of the tournament had begun.

Delhi faced a rampaging Deccan Chargers in the semi-final and were ousted by an innings by Adam Gilchrist that would have stunned them into submission. In the other semi-final, it was Royal Challengers Bangalore taking on Chennai Super Kings. Chennai, by the wont of having Dhoni as their skipper were the favourites but Kumble took him and his side out of the tournament.

In the final, the Deccan Chargers played Bangalore and the game went down to the wire. Bangalore had the first blood when Gilly went out early, but clawed back through some good captaincy and batting from Herschelle Gibbs to win the game for their side. Both, Deccan and Bangalore, alongside Delhi qualified for the Champions League T20
