Chennai Super Kings won IPL 3 in 2010

The third edition of the Indian Premier League was back in India and had eight teams participating in the tournament. The same eight sides which had played in the second edition of the tournament, Mumbai Indians, Delhi Daredevils, Chennai Super Kings, Kolkata Knight Riders, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Deccan Chargers, Rajasthan Royals and Kings XI Punjab, played in this edition of the tournament as well.

Electing to bat, Chennai posted 168 for five, thanks to Suresh Raina's unbeaten 57 and then restricted Mumbai to 146 for nine to win their maiden IPL title in the grand finale at the packed DY Patil Stadium.

Kolkata were abysmal as they had been in the second edition of the tournament. Sourav Ganguly was named the captain of the side but that hardly helped matters as they went down rather easily in the tournament going from one loss to other.

Mumbai, on the other hand, had got in the likes of Kieron Pollard into their side and got going from the start of the tournament. After two poor tournaments, they looked like the team to beat given that Tendulkar finally got going in this format of the game.

Mumbai, who were playing in an IPL final for the first time, were the most consistent side in the tournament having won 10 of their 14 league matches, but they faltered at the final hurdle.

On other hand, there were a few disappointing performances including the one by Kings XI Punjab where they did exactly what Kolkata had done in the second tournament went from one loss to another and in the end came crashing down.

Chennai, who had been the most consistent team of the tournament thus far, started slowly but picked up momentum towards the end of the tournament and went on to enter the semi-final as well.

There were the two teams from the finals of the previous edition of the tournament, Bangalore and Deccan who scraped through to the semi-finals as well.

Mumbai went on to beat Bangalore in the first semi-final of the tournament and this was followed by a convincing win for Chennai over the Deccan Chargers. There was a third-place play-off as well, which went to Bangalore while Chennai beat Mumbai in the final to clinch the trophy.
