Of course, the kings of the road are still those who own the larger travel trailers or the RV. The number of campgrounds that accomodate these larger vehicles has expanded rapidly in the past decade.
Camping doesn't have to be looked at strictly from the vehicle that gets you there. There are hundreds of sites that offer horseback camping trips, canoe or kayak camping, or even multiple day whitewater rafting trips. All of these are unique but all enjoy the great outdoors. If you want to push the limit, winter camping certainly hits that button. Of course, the ultimate for any individual camper will be survival camping.
The camping world that everyone can experience today is still proving to be the most affordable way to go as well.
