Nordic Skiing in magical Lapland
Nordic Skiing in magical Lapland

Nordic Skiing, better known as cross country skiing, can be done as well as slope skiing or as an alternative for those of you visiting Lapland who have never tried it before. All equipment can be hired, from the skis, poles, to the clothing if you require it. With 320km of mechanically prepared trails, cross country skiing in Lapland will certainly not disappoint. If you visit Lapland around Christmas time you will encounter lots of skiers, many of them locals, cross country skiing is seen in Lapland as their winter sport. 38km of trails are illuminated and on Christmas Eve it is a Lapland tradition to participate in cross country skiing.

Children are well catered for and are able to be fitted with everything they need in order to cross country ski. With 320 km of trails you may feel a little put off but there are plenty of route variations and you can make your journey as long or as short as you like. If you have never cross country skied, don't worry, many of the professionals will simply skate around you until you find your feet. There really is no better sport to try whilst in Lapland, the tracks are pleasantly quiet and the lights add to the magical aura of Lapland. All that can be heard is the snow beneath your skis and of course you may see the odd reindeer on your trek. Like all activities in Lapland, cross country skiing can be enjoyed by the whole family and why not keep hold of your skis for the whole holiday, that way you can enjoy the cross country skiing at any time day or night, the ski tracks are open quite late and it isn't unusual in Lapland to go cross country skiing until 8.00 o clock at night.

Of course after cross country skiing you will certainly want some refreshments, so why not stop off at one of the really good local restaurants where the food and drink are excellent before retiring back to your Lapland Log Cabin for a really good night's sleep.
