Regular servicing of your fire extinguishers is a legal requirement in many parts of the world so you need to ensure you comply with your local fire protection laws.
In the United States fire extinguishers in all buildings (other than houses) are generally required to be serviced and inspected by a fire protection service company at least once a year. However, details of legal requirements do vary from state to state so bear this in mind.
In England and Wales the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order of 2005 applies. It came into force on 1 October 2006. The Fire Safety Order covers the majority of premises and nearly every type of building, structure and open space.
During the fire extinguisher servicing a fire tag is usually placed on the fire extinguisher which will indicate the type of service performed and the date it was carried out. The main types of servicing include annual inspection, refilling and replacement.
Ageing Fire Extinguishers
Even if a fire extinguisher is never used it doesn't mean it'll last forever. With age they can lose pressure, corrode or seals can deteriorate under pressure.
Although extinguishers can be refurbished it's not a quick and simple process. Many people find it easier to simply replace their old fire extinguishers with brand new ones. The good news is that your old fire extinguishers can be recycled.
Always ensure you dispose of you old fire extinguishers responsibly. Your local council will be able to help with small quantities, otherwise you'll need to contact specialist contractors.
Remember, fire extinguishers are usually under high pressure and can be dangerous if not disposed of or serviced in the correct manor.
Fire Extinguishers and Vandalism
Fire extinguishers are quite often an easy target for vandalism, which is another reason for regular fire extinguisher servicing. This sort of vandalism is particularly common in schools and colleges but can occur almost anywhere.
Extinguishers might be partially or fully discharged by vandals. This will reduce the capacity to fight fires or worse still, prevent it altogether. After such an event you'll at least be looking for a fire extinguisher refill.
In areas where they're particularly vulnerable extinguishers should be kept inside cabinets that are protected by glass which must be broken to gain access. Other cabinets will sound an alarm which can only be silenced with a key.
As you can see there are many reasons why regular fire extinguisher servicing is important, the most important being that lives could be at risk if it isn't done properly.
