Google Profiles are not a new phenomenon, though still interesting - though it is not something we've seen being used much. The interest has increased after a redesign phase of the benefit which has been through, not least as the volume of products and services Google offers with your Google Adwords Account. These can be linked to your profile, and it can easily be seen what kind of interests you have as well your work, your schooling, where you have lived etc. but it is also possible to track your activities on other Google products such as Buzz and the brand new Google +1 on .com
Are Google Profiles a competitor to the good old fashion social networks like Facebook? No it's not, not at all, but it is a good way to show your Google face. Actually how Google are you? It's great that you can have your Google Buzz combines which again can be combines with Twitter so you are not locked to Google Buzz that nobody use
Also for some reasons, Google Profiles have some great ranks in the Google SERP when searching for your name just try to do it. Most people I know ended up on page 1 with the Google Profile. That even happened the very same day you post your profile.
Besides an easy and accessible approach to you and your data (yeah you do want to be public - like the rest of the world's population with profiles on Twitter, Facebook etc.), then there is good deep links to your blog or workplace. This provides a good user experience, but also a little SEO value to the construction of the given sites.
Does it make good sense to create a profile for your workplace or even your customers? No, I think not. For your workplace is not married and have kids, your workplace has not gone to school, etc. This would be pure link spam - which will help to destroy the Internet. Then use Google Profiles, but do it with care and respect for the Internet we all use every day.
