Five Reasons to Opt for Nose Refinement

Noses are a relatively small, yet immensely important element of facial anatomy. Of course, they're necessary for breathing and smelling. But, as a cosmetic surgeon, my primary focus is naturally on aesthetics (although function is also always on my mind). A person's nose is one of their most noticeable facial attributes; if someone is unhappy with their nose, it can impact their self-confidence. That's why rhinoplasty is one of the most popular procedures I perform, and why I've made it one of my specialties.

Each man or woman in New York City who seeks a rhinoplasty consultation with me has his or her own concerns and goals. I have to look at each case with a fresh new perspective. However, there are a few reasons for wanting surgery that I hear most frequently.

Your Nose Is Too Large or Too Small

Generally, an attractive face is a proportionate face. Each feature should be in harmony with other features. If the nose is too small or too large, it can throw off the balance of the entire face, and make men and women very self-conscious at the same time.

When my Manhattan rhinoplasty patients say that they feel their nose is too large or too small, they're usually talking about one or two things: the length of the bridge and/or whether the nose is broad or narrow. They may also be describing a nose with a high bridge (a hump or bump). With a thorough consultation and the assistance of computer imaging, I am able to communicate more clearly with patients and target the specific concern.

You Have Broken Your Nose

When a nose is broken, it almost never heals perfectly straight. This can be unattractive and may interfere with breathing, lead to nasal congestion, and even cause snoring.

The timing of rhinoplasty after nasal trauma is very important. It's ideal for a plastic surgeon to be consulted immediately after the injury to check for complications and mitigate any further damage. Reconstructive rhinoplasty can be performed within several weeks or after several months, depending on each patient's unique circumstances.

You Have a Bulbous, Drooping or Protruding Tip

Men and women with concerns about the tip of their nose may be pleasantly surprised to discover that surgery to improve their concerns may be less invasive than expected. Usually, surgery that requires work on the bone or cartilage of the nose involves a more invasive procedure and longer recovery with increased discomfort. Since many procedures for the tip of the nose do not require changes to bone or cartilage, surgery is quicker and more comfortable, as is recovery.

You Have a Deviated Septum

The septum is the bone and cartilage that divides the inside of the nose. When the septum is not straight, breathing difficulties may arise, as well as snoring and sleep apnea. Septoplasty is a reconstructive procedure, often covered by health insurance, to straighten the septum for functional and aesthetic improvement.

You Aren't Happy with Results of Previous Nose Surgery

As a nose surgery specialist, I see many men and women who are unhappy with the results of a rhinoplasty procedure performed elsewhere. These unsatisfactory results have often had a serious impact on the way they feel about their appearance. They may be afraid that there's nothing that can be done, and are usually quite relieved to hear that improvement is possible.
