Central Dalmatia is the stretch of the Adriatic coastline along the Croatian seashore north of the city of Dubrovnik up to Split and further to Trogir, and also covers a number of islands scattered along the coast, including Brac and Hvar to name a few. The city of Dubrovnik is considered the part of the Dubrovnik Riviera, which I will talk about later, rather than Central Dalmatia.
Along most of the coastline, the Biokovo mountain range, the second-highest in Coratia, serves as a stunning backdrop to the scene. Its highest peak is Sveti Jure (Saint George) at 1762 metres, and its area is protected as a nature park. In clear weather it is possible to see Monte Gargano in Italy, which is 252 kilometres away.
The most important cultural and traffic centre of Dalmatia is Split, which itself is a popular destination for tourists and excursionists with its old tradition, variety of historical monuments and many beaches in the city and its surroundings.
Another popular summer holiday resort in the area is Makarska with its famous harbour and the aforementioned mountainside, and the pine protected beaches.
Two massive islands dominate the bay formed between Trogir and the Peljesac peninsula, the latter belonging to the Dubrovnik Riviera. The island of Brac is the home of the most famous beach in Croatia, the Golden Horn, and the well-known medieval seaport of Bol. Another major resort, on the other side of the island, is Supetar, connected with Split by ferry.
The other big island of the area is Hvar, also known as the "Madeira of the Adriatic", the sunniest spot in Croatia. The waterfront is lined with palm trees, and the stone square in front of the Cathedral comes with fantastic views of the harbour and the surrounding islands.
For those travelling from the United Kingdom to the region, the arrival airport of Split is served by regular flights from major UK airports such as Gatwick, Heathrow, Manchester or Newcastle with a flight time of about 2 and a half hours.
