subject: A Royal Fascination [print this page] A Royal Fascination A Royal Fascination
Whether you are a keen Royalist or a vehement Republican you cannot have failed to notice our shiny and new bonus bank holiday this year. Hoorah! But, why have the powers that be' granted us mere surfs such a wondrous gift, I hear you ask! Well, don't ever let it be said that nothing good can come of marriage.
I think I might have mentioned it once but I think I got away with it!
On Friday 29th April 2011, Prince William will marry Catherine Middleton. It is a splendid occasion to celebrate the continuation of this German Aristocratic lineage. And a good opportunity to embrace our new closer association with our European neighbours. Basil Fawlty would have been proud of us all!
Now, like many of you, I find that my invitation has become delayed in the post. No, not lost, merely delayed. I assume that it was rightly sent by Her Majesty's Royal Mail to each of us in consideration of that fact that we are funding the whole enterprise through our taxes. May even have been sent First Class and by Liz's own fair hands?! Just imagine the amount of Royal saliva needed! In any case, perhaps Her Majesty's Royal Mail has struggled with the volume of invitations? It certainly wouldn't be a Royal conspiracy.
A good reason to celebrate?
Given the current financial gloom and whether amongst the hallowed few at Westminster Abbey or down the local hostelry with the Hoi Polloi we all need a reason to celebrate. And even the riff raff need to let off a bit of steam just not in Westminster Abbey please!
So, why not get involved? Even if you are an Anti-Royalist there must be something to celebrate. And it's a good excuse to get dressed up and even have a serious or satirical Royal themed event. The glorious World Wide Web can cater for all your costume needs; from fascinator to crown; from wedding hat to broach; from veil to full coats of armour (if so inclined).
The bottom line? Love them or hate them, the Royals have given us all a day off. Now we only need to persuade them to divorce and re-marry every year then William really would be the people's Prince!
