Economical and reliable means of getting a parcel to Reading are available at the click of a mouse

There is an array of options available for anyone who needs to send a parcel to Reading, no matter how urgent, or from how far away. While not officially a city, Reading's size, and its strategic location, just over 40 miles west of London, have made it an important commercial and business centre for many years. It has been the county town of Berkshire for nearly 150 years.

At the time immediately after the Industrial Revolution, Reading first came to prominence when Brunel's Great Western Railway arrived in the town in 1841, prompting the first phase of major growth in the town, which saw its population reach 59,000 by the beginning of the 20th century.

Rapid growth continued through the ensuing century, and included the building of the largest private housing development in Europe in the 1970s and early 1980s.

The town is surrounded on its western fringes by the Berkshire Downs, and to the north by the Chiltern Hills. Despite this, it is the hub of a substantial transport network. Apart from Brunel's former Great Western main line, Reading also lies close to the M4 motorway between London and west Wales, while the A34 trunk road from north of Manchester to the ancient city of Winchester also passes a short distance from the town.

Reading developed as a centre of the IT industry in the UK after the arrival in the town of early pioneers in the field, International Computers Limited and Digital. And although both are now part of much larger multi-national conglomerates, Reading remains a key centre of the country's high-tech sector, with modern-day giants Microsoft and Oracle both having substantial presences, and other big names such as Intel, Cisco, Sage, Symantec and Ericsson also operating in the area. Financial services and accountancy also employ large numbers of people locally.

Reading boasts excellent international connections, thanks to the proximity of London's two major airports, Heathrow and Gatwick, which are within an hour's travelling time or less. With both being major cargo hubs, it is possible to send a parcel to Reading from any part of the world and have it arrive in time for all but the tightest of deadlines.

Whether a parcel which needs to get to Reading is an urgent business consignment, or a delivery to a friend or relative living in the area, a swift and reliable service is offered by some of the best-known delivery companies in the world.
